about

Paul Abdul - Petals Vol 1
08/11/20
Circuitree Records

Petals is a summer themed album full of warm jazz and soul samples chopped layered and spliced, with love and care. While every sound on the album was sampled directly from the web, there are other conceptual restraints at play on Petals, intrinsic to the very title of the album.

Hailing from the ecologically diverse mountains of Asheville, North Carolina, Abdul started to think of each track on this album as a flower or plant, allowing it to grow and take shape over the course it's production.

“I let the songs develop organically by deeply listening and asking what each one needed to sustain a life out in the soil of the world, to take shape and blossom in someone’s heart.”

Rooted, so to speak, in Hip Hop, Petals is somewhat of an attempt to embody the abundance of the genre’s history as well as the diversity of nature herself.

Tracks contain vocal snippets from a menagerie of singers, poets and rappers, which when edited and recontextualized, take on new meaning.

On the track “sysmthngs” each section features a different subtly related bit of wisdom, such as “If you try to avoid conflict, it’s not gonna work” and “the most important thing, I believe, is to teach compassion,” as well as “let go completely.” Each sample is from a different source, but placed in the same track, a narrative or conversation emerges.

A range moods and styles are presented throughout, reminiscent of the North Carolinian summer which fluctuates in both temperature and precipitation.

Tracks like “usayd” are high energy and propulsive, while “atlas” has a dreamlike quality, with filtered ensembles that float, disembodied, over cloudy, vintage grooves.

Bookended by the poem “Petals” written by Amy Lowell, this spoken word piece is laid over lush flute and string arrangements to great effect. The poem itself contains a wealth of metaphor significant to us all.

“Life is a stream, on which we strew, petal by petal, the flower of our hearts.”
